Instructional strategies for enhancing academic writing competence in EFL learners
Main Article Content
Abstract
Academic writing represents a critical competency for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners pursuing higher education and professional advancement. However, developing proficiency in this complex skill remains challenging due to linguistic, cognitive, and cultural factors. This paper examines evidence-based instructional strategies that effectively enhance academic writing competence among EFL learners. Drawing from current literature in second language writing pedagogy, this study explores process-oriented approaches, genre-based instruction, technology-enhanced learning, collaborative writing techniques, and metacognitive strategy training. The analysis reveals that integrated approaches combining explicit instruction, structured practice, meaningful feedback, and authentic writing tasks yield optimal outcomes. Furthermore, the incorporation of digital tools and collaborative learning environments significantly contributes to learner engagement and writing development. The findings underscore the importance of contextually appropriate pedagogical choices that address learners' linguistic proficiency levels, academic goals, and sociocultural backgrounds. This paper provides practical recommendations for EFL instructors seeking to design effective writing curricula and implement research-informed teaching practices.
