Abstract

This study investigated Cooperative Principles that are violated by facebookers while discussing political issues in Kenya. The research was guided by the theory of Cooperative Principles of Grice (1975) that advocates for the adherence of certain conversation maxims in a conversation. The study adopted a qualitative research design since it intended to explain a naturally occurring phenomenon. The study used the Facebook pages of Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga and Hon. William Ruto as sources of data. The study adopted purposive sampling to identify eighty five comments to form data. The eligibility criterion for choosing the sample included comments posted between 1st January to 30th April 202l. In collecting data, the researcher recorded the comments made by the participants from the Facebook pages. To enhance validity of data, the researcher used newspaper cuttings from the local dailies.  Using the tenets of the theory, the researcher used content analysis to analyze his data. The study showed that facebookers violate all the cooperative principles while discussing political issues in Kenya. The study concluded that there is need for interlocutors to engage cooperative principles in there discourse so as to bring satisfactory meaning out of their comments.
