Abstract

Existing researches have confirmed that adjustment of adolescents depends on the fulfillment of their significant specific needs that consist of physical, social and intellectual needs. This study however, sought to confirm whether these factors really contributed to academic adjustment difficulties of first year students of Senior High Schools in New Juaben Municipality. This study adopted a descriptive survey design. A sample size of 250 students was randomly selected from three of the Senior High Schools in the New Juaben Municipality of Ghana. Questionnaire was used to gather relevant research data for the study. Percentage and frequencies were used as statistical tools to analyze the results with the help of SPSS. The findings confirmed that students’ adjustment difficulties were based on physical, academic and social factors. It was found that rigid control of students in boarding houses by school authorities caused academic adjustment difficulties. Equally, the absence of counselors in schools was a contributing factor to their academic adjustment difficulties.
